Wash out and surgery: A compound fracture is one in which the fracture bone(s) penetrate through the skin. This is a surgical emergency that requires immediate attention. The initial goal during surgery is to thoroughly irrigate (wash out) and debride (clean up) the bone and tissues in an attempt to prevent infection. At the same time, the fractures are repaired, often using rod for the tibia & possibly a fibular plate.
