2 subspecies: East african trypanosomiasis is caused by trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense. West african trypanosomiasis (gambian sleeping sickness) is caused by trypanosoma brucei gambiense. Both of are transmitted through blood by the tsetse fly. The two subspecies do not overlap geographically.
