A one-time symptom?: Blood appears brighter red if it is fresher or has more oxygen, and looks dark or black if it has been around longer. Occasional hormonal changes may cause changes in the quality & thickness of the uterine lining, in the amount of blood flow, and the time it takes to flow out. These things can make one's menstrual flow patterns change. An ob-gyn doctor should evaluate if symptoms persist or recur.
