A member asked:

What are thyroid autoantibodies?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Immune attack: Such antibodies are directed either towards the gland itself, which can result ultimately in hypothyroidism, or, thyroid receptor antibodies are those which sit on thyroid stimulating hormone receptors causing the thyroid gland to over work, thereby causing hyperthryoidism. Thyroid stimulating hormone receptor blocking antibodies can also sit atop the gland and prevent it from making thyroxine.
