Cataract surgery: Phacoemulsification is the current standard surgery to remove cataracts. Phaco = lens, emulsification = the manner of breaking up the lens with energy and sucking it out with vacuum power. This has been the standard for about 20 years. This may be changing in the future.

Cataract surgery: The lens (cataract) is emulsified by a handheld ultrasonic probe used by a cataract surgeon. The material is then aspirated out of the eye by the same instrument. Then a clear artificial lens is placed in the eye.
