Review Your Goals: With outpatient psychotherapy you begin a journey that changes your life forever. As with any journey there is a traveler (you), a guide (therapist), a destination (treatment goals), and a path (your life). Anxiety is common at the start. Remember the reasons you decided to embark on this quest. You will not be alone. Be proud of the fact that you have choosen to grow and improve yourself.

Breathe: Fritz perls md, the founder of gestalt psychotherapy, said, "anxiety is excitement without breathing." i agree with dr. Woods that these types of feelings can come up before any major undertaking -- like a great journey you've been planning for, & now here it is. Breathing deeply helps you connect with your commitment to gain more balance and strength, as you will in therapy. Good luck to you!

How should I relieve anxiety?

How bad?: If it is mild, engage in more regular leisure, relaxation, exercise activities. If it is severe, a doctor can help. There are psychotherapy and medications that are effective for anxiety. Probably not worth it if anxiety is mild. Rule of thumb is if anxiety is making you avoid activities, causing social isolation, or occupy much of your attention, then it is severe. Worth it to enjoy life more.

More info needed: More information please. What is the basis for the anxiety? Fear of flying? Fear that you will miss your flight? Fear of meeting someone at your destination? There are a number of good websites that can be helpful. For example: http://www.Anxietyandstress.Com/fearofflying.Html i love this one: the risk of dying in a plane crash = risk of dying by taking a bath.

What's the most effective medication to relieve anxiety?

It depends: This depends on the kind of anxiety you're experiencing, other conditions you may have, and other medications or substances you may be using also. A good psychiatric evaluation will yield reasonable and helpful choices in your case. It's also possible that psychotherapy could be of even more help than the medications.
