Unknown: Trepanning or making a burr hole, is a surgical intervention in which a hole is drilled or scraped into the human skull, exposing the the brain to treat health problems. Evidence of trepanation has been found in prehistoric human remains. Trepanning was completed in the 1880's but, it was harvey cushing who made neurosurgery a specialty, and trained a whole generation of leaders in the field.
