Nerve injury: Bone or joint injury is usually very localized and relatively obvious. More diffuse pain especially sharp and severe is usually due to nerve injury. Nerves can be pinched at the neck or in the muscle bundles. The brachial plexus can become inflamed. Tumors may press on the nerves. Old injury may leave a nerve scar. A thorough neurological evaluation would be appropriate.
