Multiple causes: Most are benign goiters, but sometimes thyroid enlargement is caused by cancer or hyperthyroidism. Treatment varies related to symptoms and cause. Most goiters do not need any treatment, but you need to see a doc to have it checked. You don't want to miss a curable cancer or suffer unnneccessarily if you have hyperthyroidism.
