Trichotillomania: Tx is based on age. At preschool age, tx is conservative since most will outgrow it. For young adults, behavior modification (habit reversal training, cognitive behavior therapy, biofeedback, hypnosis) & treating the associated disorders such as anxiety/depression/ptsd/ocd. Some medications used with moderate success are Anafranil & prozac (fluoxetine).

Medication: Trichotillomania symptoms can be increased by anxiety, so therapy to manage anxiety can be helpful in diminishing the symptoms. It used to be thought of as primarily an OCD disorder, but is now recognized as a tic disorder. Medications that are effective in treating tic disorders can be very effective.
