Skin transplant: An thin layer of skin is shaved off of the donor site on the body. That piece of skin may be turned into a mesh sheet. The skin graft is then transplanted to the area that needs it. The donor site (new wound) can be treated in a number of different ways.

Transfer of skin: Most skin grafts are "split thickness" skin grafts. This entails shaving a very thin (split thickness) slice of skin from a normal area of the body (this is the donor site) and transferring it to the wounded area. The donor skin first is run through a machine that cuts it into a mesh sheet, allowing a small sheet of donor skin to stretch out and cover a larger recipient area.
