Skin graft 101: Under anesthesia, a sliver of skin is taken from some "donor" area, usually with an instrument called a dermatome. The skin might go through a meshing device, depending on the application. It is then applied to the recipient site, and held in place with either sutures or staples. Over a period of about a week, the new skin "takes" in the location, and gradually heals in, as does the donor site.
