What would cause my 14 month old to have a high platelet count?

Perhaps dehydration: Many children show an elevated plarelet count when they are slightly dehydrated; it usually returns to normal when they drink enough to resolve their dehydration. If it is still elevated, see your pediatrician.

Inflammation...: There are many causes of higher than normal platelet count. Platelets are an "acute phase reactant", which simply means they go up in number whenever there is inflammation (like an infection [any type]). Iron deficiency can also cause this, but usually person is anemic. Whether or not it needs to get rechecked depends on how elevated the platelet count is.
