See your doctor!: I wouldn't worry - i would see my doctor! worry is not going to help. Seeing your doctor and having further testing will help show what, if anything, is wrong. And, yes, it could be serious! see your doctor!

Get checked out: It would be wise to have a formal evaluation given the above description to identify any possible injury to the kidney. A nephrologist is a type of doctor who deals with medical diseases of the kidney and can initiate a workup and refer you to other specialists as needed. Alternatively speak to your primary doctor for advice and/or referral.

With fingersticks: If the hands and fingers aren't clean and dry, home blood sugar readings may be inaccurate. Sugar on the fingers could end up falsely elevating blood sugar. A concomitant venous sample in lab could demonstrate a discrepancy. Also, the meter may be inaccurate. Eating before a fasting blood sugar may raise the blood sugar in someone with diabetes because it would not be fasting anymore.

A 19-year-old female asked:

What can cause a foul odor in urine, thats not an std?

Bladder infection: Foul-smelling urine can come from a bladder infection or even from certain foods that we eat. Stds do not usually effect the bladder and i wouldn't think they are responsible for the foul-smelling urine. More than likely it is from a bladder infection. Vaginal infections can sometimes have an odor as well and may be difficult to distinguish from odor caused by urine.

A 55-year-old female asked:

Can l-arginine lower blood pressure & if so what is recommended dosage?

Dr. Ralph Morgan Lewis
Family Medicine 38 years experience
Possibly beneficial: In some people. Arginine is converted to nitric oxide, which has a relaxing effect on blood vessels & can thus reduce blood pressure somewhat. No standardized dose has been recommended. Be advised that arginine can also trigger or worsen viral infections like herpes. Discuss this supplement with your doc before taking it.
