RA: You are right about the nerve being twisted. Due to the RA your joints are changing and they swell. Increase swelling in your ankles places pressure on the nerves that go through the "expansions" around your ankle. Hence this puts pressure on your nerves and pinches them causing burning sensation. Atherosclerosis would cause cramping pain in your calves.

Tarsal Tunnel: Most likely nerve compression called tarsal tunnel syndrome. It may or may not be related to the ra. It can be treated with injection therapy and orthotics or relieved surgically. An EMG for nerve conduction velocity can be a good diagnostic tool.
