Iron def anemia: Iron def anemia can be either from iron loss, poor absorption or inadequate intake. Iron lost through bleeding( intestinal, gynecological or from trauma/ surgery). Most of iron absorption take place in proximal intestine( duodenum). One more recently recognizable diseases is celiac disease( allergy to gluten) this can be diagnosed through specific blood work and/ or endoscopy with biopsy.

Agree with Dr.G: You may not taken the supplements for long enough to have replaced your iron store. it may take more than 6 months to get back to normal, especially if have heavy blood loss during menses.
