A member asked:

What is best for lip scar removal? vitamin e or mederma? anything else if possible?

Not much: Unfortunately, most scar treatments offer only marginal improvement over doing nothing at all. The biggest problem with the area around the lips is the amount of dynamic motion and tension that is created on the wound, which lends to a problematic scar. I find the biggest factor is the amount of surgical debridement of injured tissue affects the outcome of the scar.

Scar revision.: If the scar is irregular, thick, or wide, no topical of any kind will be helpful, but plastic surgical scar revision under local anesthesia may give the best improvement of all. If the scar is otherwise ok but just firm and pink, gentle massage with vitamin E (or any oil) will help this soften faster. Mederma is fine but not magic. Ultraviolet avoidance is critical as long as the scar is pink.
