Close to "cure": No absolute cure yet. However with the available drugs we have for CML i.e. Gleevec, (imatinib) dasatinib, nilotinib and bosutinib- CML patients can achieve complete molecular response status -where the bcr-abl is not detected/ less than 0.001 - and that status can be maintained for years with those drugs. Allogeneic stem cell transplant can cure it however is way risky and complicated compared to oral drug.

Yes: Bone marrow transplant (bmt) can absolutely cure cml, however this procedure is not without significant risk. Drugs like Gleevec (imatinib) have revolutionized CML therapy for those who cannot tolerate a bmt. Resistance to Gleevec (imatinib) usually eventually develops, but there newer drugs of this class to help (but not cure). When a child gets cml, we wrestle with bmt versus gleevec, (imatinib) since drugs eventually fail.
