Multiple: There are medications called tyrosine kinase inhibitors. They block this enzyme and treat the leukemia. There are currently three on the market, imatinib, nilotinib and dasatinib. Other treatments include bone marrow transplant but rarely done now because these medications are available. Hope this helps.

To answer your question, chemotherapy is usually necessary like for any other type of leukemia; however, there is also a special drug that is central in the chronic treatment of cml, namely Gleevec (imatinib), with a specific benefit in this type of leukemia.
