What is the difference between vitamin d3 and vitamin d?

D3 is bioactive form: I think you mean d2 v d3. D2 is ergocalciferol. Cholecalciferol is d3.    if your interest is in regards to a supplement, you want to take d3, since it's the biologically active form of d. Follow this link to an explanation from the mayo clinic on the two different types of d available. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/vitamin-d/ns_patient-vitamind.

D or D3: Nothing! The question is how much you need. 1000 units a day should suffice. Not expensive - over the counter.
