Hives: Since hives are caused by the chemical histamine, it makes sense that you would treat them with an antihistamine medication, such as Diphenhydramine (benadryl). Other sedating antihistamines that are sometimes used to treat hives include Hydroxyzine (atarax) and Cyproheptadine (periactin).
