Doctor can evaluate: A primary care doctor can evaluate a patients joint pains, and refer to a rheumatologist and/or a physiatrist (pm&r doctor) if needed. Joint pains can be from many causes, such as auto-immune problems, osteoarthritis (due to wear and tear over the years), medication side effects, joint injuries, gout problems, etc... An orthopedic doctor can also help, depending on the type of joint problem.

Multiple options: I'm assuming your concerned about nsaids with the kidney problem from your question. You can try ice, Lidoderm patches, tens electrical units, physical therapy and not hurt the kidneys. But i don't know the knee diagnosis from your question to be more exact in your specific treatment. I don't know if this is a surgical problem from the information provided. See an orthopaedic surgeon for advice.
