Cervical opening.: The cervix is the lower-most part of the maternal womb; the fetus has to pass through the cervix to achieve vaginal delivery. When labor starts, the contractions result in opening and softening of the cervix - slowly at first and rapidly later. The attached visual guide should give the uninitiated a sense of how much the cervix has to open for the fetal head to deliver.
