Why could a crushing injury to the occipital bone often be fatal?

Brain damage: The occipital bone is one of the bones of the skull, located in the back of the head. It is overlying structures in the brain (like the brainstem) that are critical to life. If those areas of the brain are damaged by a crushing injury to the occipital bone, the patient could die.
