Protruding bone: If you feel there is a definite change in the size and shape of your sons occipital bone, than have him evaluated by a doctor and possibly an x-ray would be warranted to assure all is stable. Best wishes.

Lymph node?: if he's young, its likely one or more reactive lymph nodes that are usually unfelt in the occipital area. Could be from a scalp infection. If concerned, consult your practitioner.
