GBS Positive: All OB patients are screened for group b streptococcus (gbs) @ 35-36 weeks. If positive, it simply means you carry a bacteria that has been implicated with neonatal sepsis. In the past, we only treated moms @ risk for infection, preemies, or prior neonatal infections. Now, we protect the infant by giving abx in labor to prevent infection as a precaution. Your baby will do just fine, f/u with ob.

Should be: At any one moment around 30% of women will be strep b positive even at delivery.Current screening & treatment protocols have dropped the frequency of gbs sepsis in newborns by more than 10 fold. You will likely be given abx during labor & it is important to go to the hospital as soon as your water breaks even if not in active labor.(it opens the bag of waters to potential infection).
