Yes: There are many reasons for the liver to keep producing sugar or he may be rebounding from too much short acting insulin. Humalog (insulin lispro) is not a great bedtime insulin. Talk to a diabetologist in fayettville.

Dawn phenomenon: High morning blood sugars may be the result of inability to compensate for normal hormonal changes overnight which happen anyway. The high sugar may also be a rebound from a low. Testing overnight blood sugars can help sort this out. A long acting Insulin given at bedtime may serve better than Humalog (insulin lispro) which doesn't really last very long in comparison. Please discuss with doctor.

Responding about R: Regular Insulin won't last long enough to cover the night and the same potential problem with peaking Insulin causing a low is there like with humalog (insulin lispro). A longer lasting Insulin which will cover basal needs may need to be considered. Please discuss with his doctor.
