Surgery or injection: Depends on the size of the vein and where it is. Injection or laser or surgery.

Depends: Treatment depends on the varicose vein. A sonogram would define the source of the varicose veins, larger size usually indicates an abnormality in the venous system in that case laser ablation or surgery would work best. If the veins in the leg are normal the sclerotheapy may be used.

Work up: Varicose veins of the lower extremities can have various sources. The varicose veins are a result of pooling of blood with increased venous blood pressure. The best way to close the varicose veins can be determined on physical exam and a focus venous ultrasound examination by a physician skill in treating venous disease. Check out the american venous forum or american college of phlebology.
