Usually CT scan: There a few ways to investigate whether there is a stone. History, exam and a urine test showing blood are the first hints the pain is likely a stone. Ct scan is the best way to identify a stone definitively. This is a type of radiology test where 100s of x-ray images are combined by a computer to make a 3-d view of the kidneys which show stones easily. This determines if the stone is passable.

Tests : In general, urinalysis, ultrasound or ct scan without contrast.
