Symptomatic relief: Most sore throats are viral. That means they are self limited - they go away by themselves because the body's immune system fights them off. If the sore throat is accompanied by fever of more than 48 hrs or lasts longer than three days, then it may need medical attention. For now, it's best to treat it with pain relievers and fluids.

Many possibilities: Although there are many possible causes to a sore throat, the most common cause is due to some type of infection, usually viral. These just run their course and resolve on their own. Drinking plenty of fluids, frequent hand washing, and otherwise staying as healthy as possible is all that is needed. Severe sore throats or shortness of breath or fever needs to be seen immediately by your doctor.

Suggestions: If she has any pus on her tonsils or fever for more than 2 days, I would advise a visit to the pediatrician for a strep test. Otherwise most sore throats are caused by a viral illness which typically improves over 7 days. Warm liquids and mouth gargles can provide some relief. Other causes of a scratchy throat include allergic reactions.
