Infections spread: The genital herpes virus can spread by direct contact to mouth and fingers. Outbreaks of herpes may be easily missed. Condoms may help reduce genital to genital spread, but there still can be contact outside the area protected by the condom.

Yes: If you have contact with any area that is actively shedding virus you could be infected. The transmission risk can be lowered by the infected partner taking suppresive anti viral medications.
