Find the reason: It'd be nice to know the reason for the swelling. Varicose veins is one of the most common reasons for lower extremity swelling. Elevation is reasonable, compression stockings should be used as well. Salt reduction, avoiding prolonged standing/walking or even sitting with feet down. Avoid high heel shoes as they put unnecessary stress on your feet and ankles leading to arthritis and swelling.

Tell your doc: You listened to him and that now you are not worried. However, now you are interested in possible treatment options. Some may be compressive socks or stockings, eliminating salt from your diet, possibly placing you on a diuretic. Etc.
