Allergy!: More than likely, you are sensitized to the enzyme in the female mosquito's saliva. The best treatment is to prevent bites with repellants or cover up. Also be mindful of the new outbreak of west nile virus (wnv) associated with mosquito bites.

Immune reaction: The flare-up results from the body’s immune reaction to the toxin secreted by the mosquito (or other arthropod). This reaction is common and is appropriately described as a “persistent arthropod reaction.” these can last for up to several months, but eventually resolve.
