Stool softeners: Anal fissures, especially in children, are often caused by sigificant constipation and large stools. A mild stool softener like docusate, karo syrup, or even a very low dose of milk of magnesia can take care of the constipation and get her bowels regular again. Goal is to get the stools the consistency of toothpaste. In the interim, an ointment like a&d or desitin (zinc oxide diaper cream) should soothe her sore bottom.
