A member asked:

What would happen if someone stopped producing as much melanin as normal?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Lighter color: Melanin is the basis for the normal color of the skin, the eye and some internal structures. Melanin production can be disturbed in portions of the skin producing a patchy lightening. It is altered as aging occurs and the hair turns grey. It is missing in albinos who have pale skin and pink eyes. Melanin is protective against uv light and is a cosmetic enhancement.
