Is mastectomy really necessary for a cancer patient?

Depends: As much as possible, most surgeons do not recommend complete mastectomy surgery for breast cancer unless there is no other surgical option. Lumpectomy or partial mastectomy can be done for some patients. Reasons for mastectomy may be large cancers, ulcerating cancer, inflammatory cancer, multiple sites of cancers, extensive dcis , cancer already metastatic. Ask your oncologist for opinion too.
