Many factors: Thyroid nodules are usually evaluated with ultrasounds and blood tests. Biopsies may also be done. Ultimately the treatment for a thyroid nodule depends on many factors, inlcuding a complete physical examination, that are best assessed by your physician.

Yes: Endocrinologists are good at diagnosis and many do ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration when needed. Most general surgeons and otolaryngologists have experience with the thyroid - but individuals vary in their own experience - so it is best to ask them.
