A member asked:

What is thrombocythemia, itp?

7 doctors weighed in across 2 answers

Low platelets: In itp, there are low numbers of blood cells called platelets which results in an increased risk of bleeding. In children, viral infections are often responsible and the counts improve most of the time. In adults, no cause is present and treatment involves medications such as steroids, nplate, (romiplostim) rituximab, and also spleen surgery. Treatment is begun only in case of bleeding or very low counts.

Low platelets: Thrombocytopenia means low platelets. Itp or immuned mediated thrombocytopenia is one cause of low platelets thought to be caused by increased peripheral destruction and under production. Hope this helps.
