A member asked:

How long does a transplanted kidney typically last?

Over 90% at 1 year: Over 90% of kidneys are working at 1 yr. But only half from deceased donors are working at 8-9 years and about half from living donors are working at 11-12 years. There are some sub groups in each category that can be predicted to work a few years more or less than the averages quoted. There are also some important characteristics in the recipients that strongly influence the outcome.

Depends on type: Depends on live or deceased donation. Live and genetically similar kidneys last longer-average of 10 years or more.

It depends: It depends on whether the kidney comes from a living door or a deceased (cadaveric) donor. The donor's age and gender also tend to affect the kidney function as well. A living donor kidney tends to last 15-20+ years whereas a deceased donor kidney usually lasts 7-10 years assuming that the recipient does everything right after the surgery.
