Reduces infections: Shaving can cause small cuts in the skin that can become infected after surgery. Before an operation, the surgical team shaves hair as needed in the area of incisions with an electric razor, which has been shown to reduce these cuts in the skin and theoretically reduce infections.

Increased infections: Shaving can introduce nicks in the skin that can become infected with bacteria. The cdc recommends that hair not be removed unless it will interfere with the operation. When shaving is necessary, electrical clippers should be used. One study showed that patients with shaved incision sites had a 5.6% rate of infection, compared with a rate of <1% percent among patients whose hair was clipped.
