Stress/infection: The WBC can double in a reaction to stress at any age as circulating stress cortisol causes wbc's to enter the circulation from their resting sites.The typical cause is some infectious trigger & both viral & bacterial infections can cause a similar increase. After time passes the profile of the wbc's (neutrophils/lymphs/monocytes) can suggest a likely agent.
