why do i get urinary retention when i drink?

Drink what?: Alcohol inhibits antidiuretic hormone, which would cause you to urinate even more.
If you have bladder problems, seek the help of a urologist.

What does it mean if I have urinary retention?

Dr. Dennis Higginbotham answered

Incomplete voiding: That means your bladder is not emptying completely when you void. A bladder infection, some medications, surgery in the pelvis, diabetes, and spinal cord injury are some of the causes for urinary retention.

A member asked:
Are some people more prone to getting urinary retention?
1 doctor answer • 3 doctors weighed in

Dr. Steven Bowers answered
Internal Medicine 33 years experience
Yes: Older men, in particular, can develop obstruction of the urethra by an enlarged prostate gland. Patients with certain neurologic conditions can also have problems with urinary retention. People with tumors can have compression of the ureters or urethra which may produce an obstruction of the flow of urine. Rarely a large kidney stone may cause urinary retention.

A member asked:
Do lots of people get urinary retention, or is it unusual?
1 doctor answer • 4 doctors weighed in

Dr. Edward Levy answered
Obstetrics and Gynecology 30 years experience
Unusual for women: Since women do not have a prostate gland, anatomical bladder outlet obstruction is unusual. Possible causes could be prior pelvic surgery, especially incontinence surgery if it's a little too tight, or neurological disease, including spinal cord injury.

A member asked:
How long can I wait with urinary retention to see if it goes away without seeing a doctor?

Dr. Dennis Higginbotham answered
Obstetrics and Gynecology 30 years experience
Until painful: If you are having pain you need to be seen. Frequent voiding may help, but when you feel you need to void, and you can't, you have waited long enough.

A member asked:
How much should I worry about urinary retention?
2 doctor answers • 6 doctors weighed in

Dr. George Klauber answered
Specializes in Pediatric Urology
Don't worry: Never worth worrying about medical problems unless they concern a loved one or friend.Urinary retention can always be treated and virtually never due to a malignancy. Ur in women can be caused by severe stool impaction, cystocele or uterine prolapse & correctable.Due to neurogenic bladder will need to be managed by intermittent catheterization. Surgery will cure if male with prostate enlargement.
