Because of alcohol: The basic problem with beer and gout is not that the hops etc. Are a problem, it is the alcohol content in the beer. Beer ususally has a low alcohol content, unlike spirits which have a higher alcohol content. All these are metabolized in the liver.

Not sure: Beer is a prime cause of gout due to the hops, etc.. If you have gout, stay completely away from beer if you want to prevent another attack!
