Yes: There are generally two kinds of admissions to a psychiatric hospital-voluntary & involuntary. Involuntary is when a person is usually committed by a court or held for a brief time for evaluation when they are deemed to pose a risk to themselves or other people and/or they are unable to care for themselves because they are psychotic. One may also admit themselves and that is called: voluntary.

If there is a reason: If you felt you needed to be admitted to a psychiatric hospital, you would need to be assessed for admission first to see what your problem was. If the admission team thought you needed hospitalization, they would typically then have to check on your insurance to see how it would be paid for. Then they would discuss with you the legal ways one signs in and gets out of the hospital, voluntary, etc.
