Couple of things: It would be better to get a compressive wrap on the foot to help immobilize the bones. Often times a fracture shoe or walking boot is helpful. Treatment also depends on which bone is involved.

Rest and elevate: Rest is good, elevation helps reduce swelling and wearing a surgical boot will decrease stress on bone.

Weightbearing can: Make it worse and perhaps a complete fracture as opposed to a stress fracture which is a crack in bone that is not completely through. What kind of doctor did you see? Stay off of foot, elevate. You often need a cast shoe, boot or cast, depending on which bone is affected.
