A member asked:

How will my gp be involved in my pregnancy care?

Probably not: Unless your gp is the only doctor in town who practices obstetrics, you most likely should see a real live obstetrician for your pregnancy. Then, after your delivery, if your gp is the only doctor in town who practices pediatrics, you probably will need a real live pediatrician for your new kiddo.

GP can Deliver baby: If your gp is also trained to manage and deliver babies they can be fully involved. If you have an obstetrician then the gp may be kept up on your pregnancy and be prepared to take over with the management of the pediatric needs of the newborn.

Coordinate care: Coordination of care is important with all your health needs, and having your primary care doc "kept in the loop" of your pregnancy is important. Once you deliver, your OB dr. Can communicate with your gp for follow up care. Board certified family medicine programs include newborn and pediatric care, so as long as you gp practices pediatrics, the follow-up care should be transitioned. Good luck.
