Normal: The normal limiting factor for all mammals when exercising is they reach the limit of their heart's ability to increase the supply of oxygenated blood delivered to the muscles performing exercise. As we approach this normal physiologic limit, our tissues switch from aerobic to anaerobic metabolism producing an oxygen debt which must be repaid and causes the sensation of shortness of breath.
