What should i look for in a good anti fungal nail treatment?

Penetration: The key is that the medicine penetrates into the nail unfortunately over the counter products can only work for a few millimeters or as far as the medicine can penetrate under neath the nail. Presciptin medications include a topical which has only a 8 per cent cure rate and oral antifungals which cure about 55 per cent of people who take the medication 3 months for toenails and 2 months for finger.

Tolnaftate: Fungal nails are difficult to treat. If the infection has effected less than 25% of the nail, it may be treatable with a topical medication. If the medication contains tolnaftate it has the best chance of working. Most toenail infections are not completely cleared with topical treatments and require laser toenail treatment or oral medication. See your podiatrist to have it evaluated.

Strong: Your antifungal treatment should be strong enough for the severity of your infection. A topical medication may be enough for a very mild infection if caught early. However, it may not be enough for a more severe infection.

Keep in mind...: The fda has recently come out with a blanket statement that toenail fungus can not be cured. It is "managed" by a number of modalities, but it can always come back in the future. Oral antifungal medicines (lamisil), topical medications (formula 3), laser therapy, surgical removal, homeopathic applications (tea tree oil). Talk to a podiatrist for what will be best and most effective for you.
