Knee cap wear & tear: Chondromalacia refers to wearing away of the thin layer of cartilage that lines the ends of the bones in a joint. Hyaline cartilage is a highly specialized material that is 100x slicker than wet ice on wet ice! hyaline cartilage is only about 5mm thick in most joints, and it can wear away as we age. Most times when we use the term chondromalacia patella, it refers to a pain syndrome of the knee cap, or patellofemoral pain syndrome. Its usually best treated with pt to strengthen hip flexors. Level of wear: Grade 1 is softening of cartilage. Grade 2 is fraying of cartilage. Grade 3 is deep fissures in cartilage. Grade 4 is full thickness wear to bone. This is a good general understanding of the grading.
