Delirium: He is most likely experiencing delirium, an acute mental status change usually caused by a significant physical stress such as surgery or infection especially in the elderly. It takes time to recover. Occasionally, delirium may be induced by certain medications especially narcotics and some psychotropics. Narcotics are most likely cause after a surgery, so talk to his doc in the hospital.
